Does Dermaplaning Make Your Hair Grow Thicker?

Facial hair can prevent you from looking your youthful best. This “peach fuzz”, as it is endearingly known, can detract from your beauty, making it imperative that you have it removed immediately.

This is where dermaplaning comes in.

What exactly is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a facial hair removal procedure, which is designed to get rid of the vellus hair and dead skin cells located on the topmost layer of your face. After the dermaplaning procedure, you will have smoother, softer and hair-free skin.

At Form Spa Face & Body, we have extensive experience providing a wide range of skin care treatments to men and women. We specialize in dermaplaning. Visit our Salt Lake City center for dermablade hair removal.

The process

The dermablade hair removal procedure is essentially a skin exfoliation procedure. Here, our professionals will use a combination of exfoliating agents and a scalpel, to gently remove unwanted facial hair and dead skin cells from your skin.

The procedure starts with our Form Spa Face & Body specialists washing your face with lukewarm water, to clean the dirt and grime that may have accumulated on your face. A toner is applied on the face to remove dirt particles further and to open the pores.

Next, a sterile scalpel is taken and gently moved against your skin, to remove the peach fuzz. The soft, sloping motion eradicates this facial hair and leaves behind smooth and soft skin.

Along with the facial hair, the dermaplaning procedure also cleans the face, by removing the dirt, dead skin cells and oils that have clogged your skin. This opens up your pores and makes your skin more absorbent.

If you’ve scheduled a deeper facial cleaning, a chemical peel will be applied, and the treatment continued.

Benefits of dermablade hair removal

  • Takes less than 45 minutes to complete.
  • Is an outpatient procedure.
  • Has no side effects.
  • Results in soft & smooth skin.
  • Reduces the appearance of mild fine lines.
  • Improves tone, texture, and color of skin.
  • Helps the skin absorb creams and lotions better.
  • Excellent for all skin types.

Will hair grow back thicker after the dermaplaning procedure?

One of the most common questions we receive regarding dermaplaning is whether it will increase the growth of facial hair after the treatment. The answer – it will not.

Contrary to popular belief, dermablade hair removal will not result in either thicker hair growth or darker hair growth.

The dermaplaning procedure mainly involves cutting the vellus hair off at a mid-way point. At no point during the treatment will the hair follicles/roots be affected in any way. This is why it isn’t scientifically possible for the hair to grow back thicker or darker after the procedure. When the vellus hair does grow back, it will only continue to regrow from the point where it was cut-off.

Another huge benefit that dermaplaning offers over other facial hair removal treatments like shaving and waxing is that there is absolutely zero chance of hyperpigmentation for patients who have darker skin tones.

But why do we feel our facial hair is thicker after dermaplaning?

Most people spend years without having any facial hair removal treatments performed. This is why they are unaware of how their face looks like without the peach fuzz. But once they do undergo the dermablade hair removal, they can notice the stark difference between a face with the peach fuzz and a face without. When the facial hair grows back after a few weeks, it seems as though the hair is darker or thicker, even when it isn’t.

Other myths about dermaplaning you shouldn’t believe

While we’re busting myths about dermaplaning, here are some more misconceptions you should know about:

  • Dermaplaning hurts

Dermaplaning is one of the gentlest facial hair removal treatments available. Since it is non-invasive and it doesn’t involve any chemicals, you will experience zero pain during the procedure. The only time you may experience a minor prickly sensation is when alcohol is applied to your skin before the treatment.

  • Dermablade hair removal causes acne

Dermaplaning is a great remedy for acne. It removes the dead skin and grime that clogs your pores, allowing your skin to breathe. It also allows the skin to absorb creams and lotions better, which can exfoliate and heal your damaged skin. This prevents breakouts from occurring. Dermaplaning is also an excellent treatment for mild acne scars.

  • You can perform the treatment at home with a razor

While a razor can remove peach fuzz, it cannot get rid of the dead skin cells located deep in the top layer of the skin. Additionally, a razor is much sharper and harsher on the skin than a surgical scalpel; and it can result in cutting and bleeding. Finally, there is also the possibility of the razor rupturing any acne you might have, which can lead to bacterial skin infections.

It’s best to consult trained and qualified professionals, like the ones at the Ward Institute, to perform the dermablade hair removal procedure. Speak to us to schedule an appointment.
